El Calafate

A beautiful glacier and a cancelled flight.

I arrived in El Calafate at 9pm and Colm was waiting for me at the bus station. He did not have any hostel reservations, so he decided to get a bed in the hostel I had booked.

After checking in, we went to have dinner and drinks, and then walked along the main strip.

The next day, Colm booked a flight to Cordoba for that afternoon. I planned to go see the Perito Moreno Glacier at 2:30pm, so I worked until then.

The bus to the glacier left at 2:45pm and we reached the glacier at 3:45pm. I sat on the left hand side of the bus (as recommended in my travel book) where I had direct view on the glacier as we got closer.

It was raining in the morning, but the afternoon turned out to be a really nice weather wise. I walked along the platform built to go along the glacier and stopped to take pictures for about 3 hours. Every once in a while, you hear a thunder-like sound and see small pieces of ice breaking off from the glacier and falling into the water.

I also ran into Hugo (my roommate in Vicuna) and we chatted a bit. He is on his way to El Chalten for few days.

Back in El Calafate, I went to the supermarket to get veggies and made myself a very big salad! I did some work and then met my new roommate, Anna (British) and we chatted a bit before bed. She had just arrived from Puerto Natales after doing the Torres del Paine trek.

The next morning, Anna and I went for breakfast. I then went to get a bus transfer to the airport. My flight to Buenos Aires was scheduled at 5pm and I was at the airport at 2:30pm (where I did some work).

The flight was delayed to 6:45pm and then cancelled at 7pm. We stayed in the airport until 9:30pm to get my hotel reservation, provided by the airline. While waiting, I met Mikaila and Justin who are on their honeymoon from Australia. I still had a bottle of wine that I bought in Vicuna, so we drank it while waiting.

The 3 of us ended in the same hotel for the night where we also met Michaela, a German living and working in Buenos Aires. We had dinner and drinks together in the hotel and breakfast the next morning.

The airline was able to put us all on the next day flight (at 12:30pm). We took a cab to the airport and checked in. The flight left at 12:40pm.

The next stop is Buenos Aires where I will meet Boudi!
